The City of Calgary has a fantastic ongoing public art program called OPEN SPACES: Window to a View. It's a chance to showcase local artists' work in the windows of the Telus Convention Centre LRT Station in between 1st St. and Centre St. S.E. Two of the artists with work on display this month and next include local photographer Vincent Joachim and Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Calgary, Vera Parlac.
Parlac's installation titled Shifting Terrain, engages the observer through light, art, technology and design. Passers-by will be encouraged to touch the windows that contain the installation - it's all part of Parlac's portrayal of a connection between people, the street and what's inside a building. Vincent Joachim's photographic exhibit at the Station is titled Chronicles of Stephen Avenue. This project of his amassed over 2000 photos of life, buildings and the soul of the Avenue. His photos are heartfelt, humorous and endearing. A portion of this series is on display at the Telus Convention Centre LRT Station windows - and if you want to preview some of his work, here's a link to Joachim's photo stream on Flickr.com. You really should take a peek when you have time. And if you're a photo nut yourself and wouldn't mind a few tips from Vincent Joachim, we came across some really entertaining videos about photography on his Facebook group page here.
