The results of this year's Centre City Citizen Perception Survey are out and we're here to say, it's great to hear what citizens are thinking and especially to have those thoughts documented with positive, concrete numbers.
“The survey findings show us that people are noticing The City of Calgary’s work to make our Centre City safe, clean, vibrant and vital,” said Dawn Thome, Centre City Planning & Implementation. “This feedback is important because it tells The City we need to sustain the work we are doing and it also informs our future work.”
The Centre City is a critically important area to the rest of Calgary. It is home to over 6,000 businesses, 34,000 Calgarians, over 25 public parks and hundreds of events. And it’s the economic, cultural and social hub of our city.
Here's how the telephone survey worked: this past October and November The City asked citizens to answer an assortment of questions about our Centre City. Calgarians were asked to share their impressions surrounding safety, cleanliness, amenities and their overall sense of community in the CC.
Cleanliness and safety are a priority for the Centre City group (Centre City team, along with partners on the Clean to the Core and Centre City Safety Impact Team) and also, for Calgarians who continue to express positive views about both in our Centre City. 86 per cent say safety has improved or stayed the same over the last year. 89 percent say overall cleanliness of our CC has either improved or stayed the same.

Citizens were also asked about transportation to and within the Centre City, along with their satisfaction levels with Centre City infrastructure including sidewalks, on-street bikeways and parks.
Creating a safe, inviting and vibrant Centre City is paramount to The City of Calgary - the more visitors to the area the better - and it's equally rewarding to hear from citizens who live in the area. They're saying they are enjoying their community and that they actively engage in multiple activities within the CC.

Additional findings from this, our second survey, include:
- Calgarians are visiting arts and culture sites in Centre City more often. Among all Calgarians, there has been a 5 point increase in monthly or more visits to a Centre City museum, art gallery, theatre, concert or library (from 13 per cent to 18 per cent).
- Centre City residents are making more use of recreation facilities. Among this segment, monthly or more visits to a Centre City recreation facility are up 8 points (from 28 per cent to 36 per cent).
- Residents who live out/work in Centre City are visiting the area more often to eat lunch, attend a sporting event and use river pathways. This segment reports increases in monthly or more visits to Centre City to eat lunch in a restaurant/bar (up 10 points, from 64 per cent to 74 per cent), to attend a sporting event (up 6 points, from 18 per cent to 24 per cent) and to use a river pathway (up 7 points, from 28 per cent to 35 per cent).
- The importance of parks has increased among Centre City residents. The importance of Centre City parks has increased by 5 points among Centre City residents (from 88 per cent to 93 per cent).
