Protecting the environment is very important to Centre City and we would love for Calgarians to continue to help us out! Back in November we asked that everyone partake in The City’s Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program by dropping off their leaves and pumpkins at one of the drop-off locations around the city; now it's time a similar program currently in place to recycle your Christmas tree.
The holidays are often filled with parties, family, gifts and of course that beautiful tree, but once Christmas has passed you are often left buried in used gift-wrap with a tree that is quickly losing its character. Rather than be embarrassed, you can turnover a new leaf and recycle most of your ‘Christmas remnants’. The City of Calgary’s Christmas Tree Recycling program offers two different options for Calgarians, making recycling your Christmas tree as simple as possible. The first option is the Christmas tree pick-up, place your real tree next to your black cart before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8th and it will be picked up within three weeks. Check out your community’s collection date to find out when you can expect your tree to be picked up. Alternatively, there are eight temporary drop-off locations in place to drop-off your real tree. Stop by one of the locations around the city between December 26th and January 27th to recycle your tree. Check out The City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program link to find out the location of each drop-off site. But before you recycle your tree be sure to remove all of your ornaments and please do not wrap or bag your trees.
We would like to thank you in advance for recycling your tree, as the impact of keeping out more than 40,000 trees on annual basis helps to reduce the strain on our city’s landfills. Your recycled Christmas trees are chipped into mulch, a product that is great for your garden by assisting with water retention. The mulch can be picked up free of charge at the East Calgary Landfill, while quantities last. Not only will you be protecting the environment but you also get can get free mulch and carry your green practices into enhancing your garden in the spring!
Recycling your Christmas tree isn’t the only way to protect the envionment. Think of all the cards, bags and wrapping paper that have accumulated around your house throughout the holidays. Thankfully, The City of Calgary has the great Blue Bin program in place to remedy the situation.
Here are a couple of tips:
- you can recycle wrapping paper as long as it doesn’t contain bows, strings or ribbons
- crumple all of your wrapping paper into balls before placing it into your blue cart
- you can also recycle: cards, envelopes, bubble wrap, cardboard boxes and gift bags
- please do not recycle: ribbons, bows or string, metallic wrapping paper, tinsel, Christmas ornaments or molded plastic or foam.

See just because you enjoyed the holidays with all the beautiful decorations and wrapping doesn’t mean you have to be the Grinch. Just by simply recycling your tree and papers you can have a huge impact on both Calgary’s landfills as well as the environment. All the best in the New Year.
